Christchurch (Ōtautahi) is the largest city in the South Island, with around 419,200 residents and a city economy of roughly NZD $36.6 billion in the year to March 2025. Christchurch is also New Zealand's aerospace capital. It was the first region to publish an aerospace sector plan, and the 2025 Canterbury Aerospace Strategy targets a NZD $1 billion sector and about 1,500 high-value jobs by 2035. Dawn Aerospace, Kea Aerospace and Pyper Vision build here, Tait Communications exports critical radio from its Harewood base, and the Tāwhaki National Aerospace Centre at Kaitorete gives the region a launch and advanced-aviation test site. Seequent, Trimble, Allied Telesis Labs and Datacom round out a high-tech manufacturing and software cluster.

Christchurch firms deploying AI for farm and food-supply coordination, aerospace and manufacturing quality and compliance, port and Antarctic-gateway logistics, and patient and customer access are pulling ahead of peers still running everything by hand. The combination of a strong engineering talent pipeline and a rebuilt, innovation-minded city makes Christchurch one of the highest-leverage places in New Zealand to put production AI to work.
