Debrecen is Hungary's second-largest city, with roughly 200,000 residents, and the economic, scientific, and medical centre of eastern Hungary. Once a regional and agricultural hub, it has become one of Europe's most concentrated electric-vehicle and battery investment clusters. Around it sits the 710-hectare Southern Economic Zone beside Debrecen International Airport, anchored by CATL, whose roughly EUR 7.3 billion, up-to-100 GWh gigafactory is the largest greenfield investment in Hungary's history, with an initial 40 GWh phase set to begin cell production in early 2026. EVE Energy (around EUR 1.4 billion, about 28 GWh), Semcorp (separator film), EcoPro BM (cathode materials), Vitesco Technologies (EV inverters), thyssenkrupp, Krones, Deufol, Continental, and ITK Holding fill out a deep automotive and battery supply chain. All of this runs under IATF 16949, the global automotive quality-management standard.

The older economy runs alongside the megaprojects. Teva operates one of its largest global manufacturing and R&D sites in Debrecen, producing active pharmaceutical ingredients and finished generics. The University of Debrecen, rooted in the Reformed College of 1538 and Hungary's largest provincial university, educates more than 28,000 students and runs a Clinical Centre with over 7,000 staff and more than 4 million patient contacts a year. A shared-services cluster of nine centres and more than 4,700 employees, including BT, Deutsche Telekom IT Solutions, EPAM, Flowserve, Diehl Aviation, and NI, handles finance, IT, and customer operations for European clients.

Every one of these workloads generates relentless administrative drag: quality documentation and PPAP submissions on the production line, batch records and pharmacovigilance in pharma, multilingual back-office tickets in the service centres, and patient and supplier paperwork across the hospital and supply chain. Debrecen firms automating quality and supplier coordination, document processing, multilingual customer service, and predictive maintenance are pulling ahead of peers still doing it by hand.
