Ghent is Belgium's second-largest city by population (around 270,000 residents, roughly 477,000 across the metro) and the largest student city in Flanders. Its economy is unusually balanced: world-scale automotive assembly at Volvo Cars Ghent, fully integrated flat-steel production at ArcelorMittal Belgium, one of Europe's leading biotech clusters around Ghent University and VIB, and the cross-border North Sea Port that supports about 106,000 jobs and roughly EUR 14 billion in added value.

Each of those sectors carries heavy, document- and coordination-intensive operations. Volvo Cars Ghent built a little over 186,000 vehicles in 2024 and runs welding, painting, and final assembly under IATF 16949, generating relentless supplier-coordination, homologation, and quality-documentation work. ArcelorMittal Gent ships 5 to 6 million tonnes of flat steel a year, around 15% of Europe's car steel, on a stream of mill certificates and traceability records. The biotech cluster runs clinical-trial coordination, batch documentation, and regulatory submissions under EMA, EU GMP, and ISO 13485.

Ghent's advantage is its talent base and ecosystem. Ghent University (around 41,000 students, ranked inside the global top 150) and VIB, the Flanders biotech institute, anchor the Tech Lane Ghent Science Park in Zwijnaarde, which hosts more than 90 knowledge-intensive start-ups and over 4,400 high-tech professionals across ICT, cleantech, biotech, and materials. argenx, the nanobody pioneer that grew out of that ecosystem, now runs its operational headquarters in Zwijnaarde.

The city that pioneered the Industrial Revolution on the continent (the textile city of 1,500 factories) is now decarbonising heavy industry through projects like ArcelorMittal's Steelanol and electrifying car production at Volvo. Ghent firms that automate the manual back office now, under EU and Belgian data-protection rules, are pulling ahead of peers still running everything by hand.
