Marrakesh is Morocco's leading tourism destination and one of the most-visited cities in Africa. The city of just over one million people, within a Marrakech-Safi region of 4.89 million, runs an economy concentrated on the visitor: the UNESCO-listed medina, Jemaa el-Fna and the souks, hundreds of riads, and palace hotels such as La Mamounia, Royal Mansour, Four Seasons, Mandarin Oriental, and Sofitel. In 2024 the destination set a record with nearly 4 million visitors and more than 12 million overnight stays at above 72% occupancy, capturing close to 40% of all tourist nights in Morocco.

Hospitality at this scale is relentless operational work. Bookings arrive across dozens of channels, guests message in Arabic, French, English, and Spanish at all hours, concierge teams coordinate excursions to the High Atlas, Essaouira, and the Sahara, and front-of-house runs seven days a week through spring and autumn peaks. The artisan economy runs alongside it: the 18 souks and the Ensemble Artisanal employ more than 40,000 people in leather, lanterns, carpets, pottery, and woodcraft, a trade sustained directly by the daily flow of visitors through the medina.

Beyond tourism and crafts, Marrakesh is one of Africa's leading business-events hubs. It hosted COP22 in 2016 and the 2023 Annual Meetings of the World Bank Group and the IMF at the 300-hectare Bab Ighli site, alongside the Palais des Congres. Real estate and construction concentrate in the Palmeraie, Amelkis, and golf-resort corridors serving a large foreign-buyer market, while irrigated agriculture across the roughly 310,000-hectare Haouz plain (citrus, cereals, olives) remains a core regional industry, and Menara Airport handled 9.26 million passengers in 2024, about 28% of national air traffic.

Marrakesh operators deploying AI for guest messaging and reservations, multilingual concierge and excursion coordination, MICE and event registration, artisan and gallery order handling, and property-enquiry qualification are pulling ahead of peers still running everything by hand. Cadi Ayyad University, founded in 1978 with on the order of 100,000 students, supplies a deep multilingual and engineering talent base, making Marrakesh a high-leverage city to deploy production AI under Law 09-08 and CNDP discipline.
