Klaipeda is the third-largest city in Lithuania and the country's only seaport, home to about 160,000 people on the Baltic coast. It punches far above its size: the Klaipeda region generates roughly 12% of national GDP, accounts for about 16.2% of all exports of Lithuanian-origin products, and attracted around €2.2 billion in foreign direct investment in 2023, second only to the Vilnius capital region. Klaipeda County also recorded the lowest unemployment rate in Lithuania in mid-2025, at about 7.4%. The economy here is maritime, industrial, and export-driven rather than office-based.

The Port of Klaipeda anchors everything. It is the busiest seaport in the Baltic states and the northernmost ice-free port on the eastern Baltic coast, handling about 35.5 million tonnes of cargo in 2024, up 8%, with a container record of 1,068,771 TEU and roughly a 39% market share among the region's ports. Terminal operators such as Klaipedos Smelte, KLASCO, and BEGA, the KN Energies LNG terminal with the FSRU Independence, and the BLRT Western Shipyard and Western Baltija Shipbuilding ship-repair cluster run continuous, high-volume operations. Add DFDS ferry services, freight forwarders, and customs brokers and you have a port economy that moves enormous volumes of cargo, documents, and declarations every day.

Beyond the quays, the Klaipeda Free Economic Zone hosts over 100 companies from 23 countries employing more than 5,000 people, with cumulative investment above €825 million. It is anchored by large PET-plastics producers Orion Global PET, the first European operation of Indorama Ventures, and Neo Group, which alone makes around 12% of Europe's PET, alongside Retal Baltic, Glassbel Baltic, Heidelberg Materials, Rehau, and Hawe Hydraulic. Klaipeda is also the centre of Lithuania's fishing and fish-processing industry, and the city is fast becoming the base port for Lithuania's first offshore-wind farms, with new quays being built on the Smelte peninsula to assemble and stage turbine components.

Klaipeda firms deploying AI for cargo and customs documentation, terminal and gate operations, ship-repair and maintenance scheduling, manufacturing coordination, multilingual customer service, and back-office processing are pulling ahead of peers still running everything by hand. A maritime-trained, English-working talent base from Klaipeda University and the Lithuanian Maritime Academy, plus a regulator that understands logistics and energy, makes Klaipeda one of the most practical EU port cities to deploy production AI under GDPR and the EU AI Act.
