Riga is the capital of Latvia and the largest city in the Baltic states, with about 605,000 residents, roughly a third of Latvia's population of 1.86 million. It overwhelmingly dominates the national economy: in 2023 the Riga region produced 65.8% of Latvia's GDP, about EUR 26.0 billion of the EUR 39.6 billion national total, with regional GDP per capita near EUR 30,400, the highest in the country and about 2.6 times the level of the poorest region. Roughly 72,300 enterprises operate in the city, around 41% of all companies registered in Latvia.

IT and global business services run deepest. Riga is one of Central and Eastern Europe's fastest-growing business-service-centre locations, with about 54 service centres employing around 18,300 people in the city and IT making up the largest share of that workforce. Accenture runs a delivery and technology centre of roughly 1,500 people, SEB Global Services about 700, Circle K Business Centre about 900, Emergn more than 300, and Cabot more than 250, alongside TietoEVRY and a deep finance, customer-service and back-office base. These centres process enormous volumes of payments, accounting entries, tickets, KYC checks, and customer messages every day.

Riga is also the Baltics' transport, aviation and pharmaceutical hub. The Freeport of Riga is the largest port in the Baltic states, handling about 18.1 million tonnes of cargo and crossing half a million container units for the first time in 2024. airBaltic, the Latvian flag carrier headquartered at Riga airport, runs an all-A220 fleet of about 55 aircraft, carried about 5.1 million passengers in 2024, and is the world's largest A220-300 operator. Grindeks, headquartered in Riga, is the leading pharmaceutical manufacturer in the Baltics, exporting to more than 90 countries, with Olainfarm and the state utility Latvenergo rounding out the city's industrial base.

Riga firms deploying AI for back-office and ticket operations, payments and KYC, customs and port documentation, multilingual customer service, batch and quality records, and finance reconciliation are pulling ahead of peers still running everything by hand. A large, multilingual, university-fed talent base, with strong English, Latvian and Russian skills and engineers from RTU and the University of Latvia, makes Riga one of the higher-leverage Baltic cities to deploy production AI under GDPR and the EU AI Act, with Latvijas Banka and the Data State Inspectorate setting the supervisory bar.
