Thessaloniki is the economic capital of Northern Greece and the Balkans, a metro of roughly one million people and the country second city after Athens. Pfizer runs its global Center for Digital Innovation here with more than 1,000 specialists, Deloitte opened its Alexander Competence Centre in 2018 with over 1,200 executives, and Cisco, Deutsche Telekom, and Chubb have all established technology and operations centres. Domestic firms such as Netcompany-Intrasoft, Epsilon Net, and Veltio add depth. The draw is consistent: a large, highly educated, English-fluent graduate pipeline from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the largest university in Greece and Southeast Europe with about 88,000 students.

Beyond ports and technology, the metro runs on food and agri-processing (Macedonian Thrace Brewery and the Vivartia / Goody group, founded in the city), energy and manufacturing (HelleniQ Energy refining and the Thessaloniki-headquartered Pyramis Group), and tourism and trade fairs (TIF-HELEXPO has run the Thessaloniki International Fair since 1926). Each of these sectors carries heavy administrative load: customs and freight documentation, multilingual customer service, supplier coordination, and document-driven back offices that consume thousands of staff hours every week.

The combination of a deep, lower-cost technical talent base and frictionless EU single-market and data access makes the city one of the highest-leverage places in Southeast Europe to deploy production AI under EU GDPR and the EU AI Act.
