Metro Manila, officially the National Capital Region, is the capital region and the financial and corporate engine of the Philippines. The 2020 census recorded about 13.5 million residents in the NCR, and the wider Mega Manila built-up area reaches well past 25 million. The region produced 31.2 percent of national GDP in 2023, far ahead of the next regions, and its economy grew 5.6 percent in 2024. Services dominate, and the NCR alone accounts for roughly 41 percent of the country services output, anchored by outsourcing, finance, retail, and government across Makati, Bonifacio Global City, Ortigas, and Quezon City.

Manila is the recognised global leader in business-process outsourcing. The IT-BPM industry generated about 38 billion US dollars in revenue and employed 1.82 million people in 2024, and the bulk of that workforce sits in the NCR PEZA towers. Concentrix, the largest IT-BPO employer in the country with an estimated 120,000 staff, Accenture with around 79,000, plus Teleperformance and Alorica run sprawling Metro Manila delivery centres. Finance runs almost as deep: the three largest banks, BDO Unibank, Metrobank, and BPI, all headquarter in Makati, and the Philippine Stock Exchange in Bonifacio Global City listed roughly 270 to 280 issuers at a total market capitalisation near 16.5 trillion pesos in 2024.

The local advantage is the depth and English fluency of the talent base. The University of the Philippines Diliman, the country top research university, runs a Master of Engineering in Artificial Intelligence; Ateneo de Manila and De La Salle University add strong computer-science, data-science, and machine-learning programmes, with De La Salle the leading private university for Computer Science in the QS 2026 subject ranking. That pipeline feeds both the outsourcing floors and a growing fintech, e-wallet, and AI startup scene. The big conglomerates, Ayala in Makati, SM Investments at the Mall of Asia complex in Pasay, and San Miguel in Ortigas, sit alongside PLDT and Globe Telecom across the same corridors.

Metro Manila firms automating contact-centre and back-office operations, customer onboarding and KYC, document-heavy finance and procurement workflows, and high-volume customer support are pulling ahead of peers still doing the work by hand. With the Data Privacy Act fully enforced by the National Privacy Commission and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas signalling AI-governance expectations for banks after its 2024 thematic review on AI and machine learning, the organisations that build governed, auditable AI today will be the ones ready as the rules tighten.
