Izmir is the major Aegean port, manufacturing, and agribusiness city of Turkey, and the country third-largest provincial economy after Istanbul and Ankara. The province holds about 4.49 million people and generates roughly 6.1% of national GDP, with around 9.1% of Turkey export volume moving through it (Invest in Izmir). The Port of Izmir at Alsancak, operated by Turkish State Railways, is the principal container and general-cargo gateway of the Aegean, working alongside the private terminals at Aliaga and Nemrut Bay.

The industrial base is deep and export-driven. Petkim petrochemicals and the Tupras refinery anchor the Aliaga corridor; CMS Jant produces millions of light-alloy automotive wheels; Pinar and Tukas anchor branded and processed food; and the Aegean Free Zone in Gaziemir concentrates automotive components (Mahle), construction equipment (Hidromek), and aerospace systems (Fokker Elmo, PFW Aerospace) across roughly 20,000 jobs and more than 4 billion dollars in annual trade. Izmir hosts 13 organized industrial zones, two free trade zones, and four technoparks.

Agribusiness is the other half of the Aegean story. The hinterland around Izmir, Manisa, and Aydin is Turkey dominant export region for dried figs, sultana raisins, olives and olive oil, and tobacco, and Izmir is the principal processing and export point. Turkish dried-fruit exports passed 1.5 billion dollars in 2023, much of it routed through the Aegean Exporters Associations, which are headquartered in the city. A growing renewable-energy and technology sector, anchored by Teknopark Izmir on the IYTE campus and strong Aegean wind resources, rounds out the economy alongside Aegean tourism.

For Izmir exporters, every hour spent rekeying customs paperwork, chasing shipment status, or reconciling traceability records is margin lost in a high-volatility lira environment. Firms deploying AI for export documentation, port and logistics coordination, supplier and quality workflows, agri-traceability, and multilingual customer handling are pulling ahead of peers still running everything by hand. The combination of three large universities, a deep manufacturing workforce, and English-capable free-zone and technopark talent makes Izmir one of the highest-leverage cities in Turkey to put production AI to work.
