Cairo is the capital of Egypt and the economic centre of the Arab world. The Greater Cairo metro area holds roughly 22.6 million people and generates around US$190 billion in GDP, close to half of Egypt total output. The city concentrates the central government, the major banks, the Egyptian Exchange, and a young technology workforce, all inside one of the ten most populous urban areas on the planet.

Finance runs deep here. The Central Bank of Egypt, National Bank of Egypt, Banque Misr, and Commercial International Bank are all Cairo-based, alongside the Egyptian Exchange (EGX), which reached a record market capitalisation near EGP 2.29 trillion in December 2024 across 229 listed companies. The Financial Regulatory Authority supervises the capital market, insurance, and the new derivatives segment, while the CBE Instant Payment Network and InstaPay, plus fintechs such as Fawry, have pushed digital payments into the mainstream.

Cairo is also a leading global nearshoring destination. Egypt hosts more than 240 offshoring companies running 270-plus global service-delivery centres, with ICT and outsourcing exports reaching about US$4.8 billion in 2025 and the ICT sector growing at double-digit rates. Microsoft, IBM, Oracle, Cisco, Dell, Vodafone, and Orange operate delivery and R&D centres around Cairo, many clustered in Smart Village, while local firms like Raya CX, ITWorx, and Egabi serve clients across Europe, the GCC, and Africa.

Cairo firms putting AI to work on government service backlogs, bank KYC and transaction monitoring, multilingual contact-centre operations, manufacturing uptime, and tourism inquiry handling are pulling ahead of peers still running everything by hand. A large bilingual Arabic and English talent base, plus an EET time zone that overlaps European business hours, makes Cairo one of the highest-leverage cities anywhere to deploy production AI.
